Claude Desmond was the oldest child of William James Desmond and Margaret Elvira Furr. Shortly after his birth in Shenandoah County, Virginia, the family moved to Newark, Ohio and then on to Boston, Massahcusetts. They finally settled in Ronceverte, West Virginia. Claude started working for the C&O railroad as a boy in Ronceverte. One of his duties was to wake the engineers and their crews up in the morning so that they could be ready for their runs. He went on to become a clerk and statistician for the C&O. Claude never married. He died in Huntington, West Virginia after a long illness.
