WASP WWII
318th Army Air Force Flight Training Detachment
Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas
Class W4

Although she was known in her military life as WWII WASP Marie Ethel Sharon, she was known to her family as Ethel Marie Cihler. She was born in Forsyth, Montana, and was the daughter of John P Cihler and Agnes Pearl Douglas. After John P Cihler passed away in 1930, Agnes Pearl married second to George F Euston 10 November 1940 at Yakima County, Washington. George had first married to Sidney W Rhoades 21 April 1904 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sidney had passed away prior to his second marriage to Agnes Pearl.

One of Marie Ethel's step-siblings was Richard Rhodes Euston, and her brother was Arthur Joseph Cihler, who died as a child in Montana. Marie Ethel's sister was Alice Mae Cihler Janzik. They had moved from Montana to Bend, Oregon.

She was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon.

She entered Army Air Force flight training 14 February 1943, at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas and graduated 7 August 1943 in Class W4. She was stationed at Long Beach Army Air Base, California.

Along with her instructor pilot, Lt Hinton C Daniel, she was killed in B-25D #41-29841 aircraft on a night flying instrument training mission near Tecumseh, Nebraska.

It was raining at the time of the crash. The plane crashed on the farm of John Murphy, close to his house, and did not catch fire. According to the accident report, the latch on the nose gear door failed, causing the door to come off and hit the propellors on the starboard engine. In conjunction with this, the engine appeared to have failed, thus causing the aircraft to enter into a steep dive.

She was one of thirty-eight WWII WASPs killed while in the service of their country.
