CIVIL WAR

Samuel Battles and his wife Mariah were from North Carolina but made their way to Xenia, Ohio as early as 1860. He served as a Private in Company K, 44th United States Colored Troops. In 1880 he was a well digger but suffered from paralysis on his right side. He received an invalid pension for his Civil War service on December 9, 1881. Only one child was found for Samuel and Mariah; Carrie Battles Moore, who received a minor child's pension on September 11, 1887.
He probably died between 1881 and 1890 in Xenia, OH.

-Post and garrison duty at Chattanooga, TN, until November, 1864.
-Action at Dalton, GA, October 13, 1864.
-Battle of Nashville, TN, December 15-16.
-Pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River December 17-28.
-Post and garrison duty at Chattanooga, TN, in District of East Tennessee, and in the Dept. of Georgia until April, 1866.
-Mustered out April 30, 1866.

Emancipation records in Greene Co., OH include Samuel as a son of James and Betsey Battles. Born April 28, 1822, his father was freed 7 Nov 1831 and his mother in June 1834 from Campbell Co., VA and were in OH 28 Jan 1834.
