Job T. Hickman was mustered into service on August 24, 1861, and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on January 1, 1863. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 1, 1864, and then to captain just before his muster out on September 8, 1864.

He was a member of GAR Post 2 in Philadelphia after the war.
