Born in Wigton, Robert and wife Hannah moved to Lancashire before 1871. Most of the children were born in Lancashire. He was a blacksmith who likely worked mostly with horses because his death certificate says "horseshoer." He died of stomach cancer, from which he suffered for several years.

About 1888, Robert brought his family to San Diego, CA. He became a naturalized citizen on 8 August 1894 in San Diego. In 1899, he is listed as working as a blacksmith at U S Ballast Point for the Army at Ft. Rosecrans.

He and wife Hannah had 11 children with 8 still alive as of 1900:

DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Robert Bristol of 654 Towne avenue died yesterday, following a long illness. Mr. Bristol is survived by his wife and ten children. The funeral will be held at the residence tomorrow at 2 o'clock, the interment to be in Rosedale cemetery. Mr. Bristol was a member of the Foresters and Workmen, which orders will attend the services.
