DEATH OF HENRY GEIST

Henry Geist, Civil War veteran, a respected old resident of this town has passed away at his home on North Street Monday morning at 11 o'clock. He was 84 years of age and had been in failing health for some months, due to kidney and heart trouble.
While realizing that his end was near he remained cheerful and was always glad to entertain his soldier friends. H.A. Read called on him Sunday evening and had a long talk with him.
Mr. Geist walked about the yard Monday morning. When he returned to the house he complained of feeling worse. His daughter, Mrs. Cook, took him by the arm to assist him to a chair, and he expired just as the chair was reached.
Mr. Geist was born at Nassua, Germany, on Dec. 27, 1836. He came to America when 12 years of age, first stopping at Rochester, this state, where he worked in a tailor shop. Later he went to Wisconsin. He was married to Bertha Frike at Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1857. She died in Montevideo about 30 years ago.
During the Civil War Mr. Geist served in Company C, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry, and was a member of Lewis McKune Post No. 27. During his residence in Waseca he was a devout member of the German M.E. Church.
There are seven children surviving, as follows: Mrs. John Kenney, Paola, Mont; Mrs. O.A. McCoy, Trammald, Minnesota; Mrs. Caroline Cook, Odessa, Wash.; Charles Geist, Clara City; William Geist, Willmar; Mrs. Della Dildine, Aurora, Illinois; Ben Geist, Roiners??. All are expected here to attend the funeral except the first named, who is unable to come. Mrs. Cook of Odessa, Wash has been here for some time taking care of her father. End.

Additional Information:

Henry served in Company C 4th Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. Son of Johann Walther Geist and Louise Dorthea Hellern. See more below, there is a possible alternate mothers name of Maria Dorothea Eichhorn, daughter of Christian Eichhorn and Anna Marie Fry of Obernhein as found by a Geist Family researcher at the SLC Family History Library. She died 4 June 1839 and Johan Walther Geiss remarried shortly after. It was learned there also that the name may have originally been Geiss and later "Americanized" to spelling of Geist. It is said as a young boy his family had settled into Rochester, Olmstead, Minnesota where Henry worked in a tailor shop. In addition it is said that on Henry and wife Bertha "Amelia"s marriage certificate found in the Sheboygan County Courthouse, that it lists her as Amalia Fricke Schmidt (a widow) and the official marriage date is 6 June 1866, held in the Town of Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, which differs from what Henry is purported to have told family members a date of 1857 or 1858, BUT THAT IT DIDN'T GET REGISTERED FOR SOME REASON. Census info and other records would indicate that she went by "Amelia" rather than Bertha. At that time, Henry listed his parents as Johan Walther Geist and Louise Dorothea Geist. This contributor is still researching where the last name of Hellern was found, could be a maiden or other married name. At any rate there are differing names coming up on records and passed down family information. Thanks to the MJG contributor who visited the SLC Family History Library and provided much of this information. After "Amelia" died, Henry married Paulina Mathilde (Detleff), Koop, widow of Claus Koop.
