Sarah married Thomas Rutherfoord on 21 August 1790. They had at least 17 children.


Their son John was a prominent Virginia politician, and served as Acting Governor of Virginia in 1841 and 1842. Their daughter Sarah married William B. Randolph of Chatsworth in 1815.
