"Grandma" Irene T. Aikman, 103, Tecumseh, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011, in Tecumseh.

She was born Feb. 23, 1908, to Edward Osgood and Dora Pearl (Morgan) Smith in Kingsville, Texas.

Irene was raised in Wynnewood.

She was a 1927 graduate of Wynnewood High School and attended Business College.

She married Reverend F. Clyde Aikman, March 9, 1930, in Oklahoma City. After marriage, she lived in several places with her husband, who pastured for many churches, moving to Tecumseh in 1972 and has lived since.

Irene was a homemaker and worked for the Executive Secretary of the Baptist General Convention. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano for the adult Sunday School department and singing in the church. Irene was a historian and the Garden Club Reporter. She published and wrote the Live Wire Gazette for the First Baptist Church and wrote general interest articles. She also served as the church librarian for 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde, on March 1, 1982; daughter, Patty Ann Aikman Overstreet; two brothers, Robert E. Smith and James E. Smith; and sister-in-law, Margie Smith.

Irene is survived by son, James Wendell Aikman; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other family member, including friends, Betty and Dick Napier, Tecumseh, their children Jill and Danny; Rhonda and Bret Ellard, Shawnee, and their son Ben.

Service will be 10 a.m., Friday, May 27, 2011, at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Tony Peak, Tecumseh First Baptist Church officiating. Private burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
