Mildred Leary, Retired Byron Postmaster Dies
BYRON- Former Byron postmaster, business woman, and school teacher Mrs. Mildred Leary, 78, died Memorial day, Friday, May 30, in the Rockford Memorial hospital.
Mrs. Leary, a 1909 graduate of Byron high school, was named Byron postmaster in 1949 and retired from the post in January 1966. She and her husband, the late Mose Leary, operated a dairy and retail milk distributing business in Byron from 1922 until 1942.
Born Sept. 6, 1890 in Shannon, Mrs. Leary was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Barry. She had been a resident of the Byron area for 69 years.
She married Mose Leary in Oregon June 10, 1914. She was a teacher in the Mills school, west of Byron, and in another one-room school near Seward.
The Learys farmed west of Byron, buying Mrs. Leary's parents' farm the William Barry farm at the "Y" in 1920. They lived there until 1942 when they moved to Byron. Mr. Leary became a custodian at the Byron schools and Mrs. Leary clerked at the Dixson Department Store for several years before her postmaster appointment.
Mrs. Leary was a 50-year member of the Royal Neighbors and the Byron Grange. She was also a member of the United Church of Byron and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Harold of Byron and Clyde of Plymouth, Ind., and seven grandchildren.
Services were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Bakener-Morrison Funeral Home, Byron, with the Rev. George Hartz, pastor of the United Church of Byron, officiating. Burial was in the Byron Cemetery.

Open House Set at Byron
Mr. and Mrs. Mose Leary Byron, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, June 14, with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. in Byron Community House. The couple married June 10, 1914 in Oregon, have two sons, Harold and Clyde, both of Byron and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Leary recalls another golden wedding celebration she attended in 1893. She and four of her cousins were at the anniversary of their grandparents, John and Rachel Smiley Barry, on March 28, 1893. Her four cousins, Miss Rachel Shiels, Rockford, Mrs. Rose Wilmarth, Oregon, Mrs. Hannah Anderson, and John Gill, both of Byron hope to be present at next Sunday's open house.
