PRIEST FROM AREA AND 2 COMPANIONS KILLED WHEN FISHING BOAT CAPSIZES

REV. VLADIMIR FIRCZAK VICTIM OF TRADGEDY AT OCEAN CITY,NEW JERSEY
"BROTHER" REV. PAUL FIRCZAK, BEAVER MEADOWS AND SIX OTHERS RESCUED

The Rev. Vladimir Firczak, 42, of Bethlehem, a native of McAdoo, and formerly an assistant pastor at two area churches, perished along with two companions yesterday when a cabin cruiser upset in turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean off Ocean City, N.J. His brother, Rev. Paul Firczak, pastor of St. Peter and Paul's G.C. church, Beaver Meadows, and six others were left floundering in the sea. They were picked up by Coast Guardsmen. None of the survivors was seriously injured...
A survivor said that the 10 were returning from a fishing trip when they encountered the rough waters while attempting to enter the Great Egg Harbor Inlet near Ocean City. As near as Coast Guardsmen could ascertain, the accident occurred about 6:15 p.m., about a mile from the inlet...
Coast Guardsmen said the three were apparently killed when the roof of the boat struck them on the head as it overturned...

By 10:30 p.m., Father Paul was well enough to call Rev. John Koval, pastor of St. Mary's G.C. Church to inform him of the tragedy. Dr. Emil Martyak left for N.J. early this morning and will accompany the Beaver Meadows priest home.

Father Vladimir Firczak was a native of McAdoo, a son of Anna and the late Michael Firczak. He attended the McAdoo public schools and excelled in athletics there before entering the seminary. He attended St. Procopius seminary in Lisle, Ill., and then studied at Uzhorod, Czechoslovakia for three years. When World War II broke out, he returned to this country and finished his theological studies at Lisle. He was ordained November 19, 1940 as a priest of the Byzantine Rite.
He first served as an assistant pastor at St. John's Church in Hazleton, and then appointed pastor of St. Michael's Church in Allentown. Later pastorates were in Aliquippa and Cannonsburg, Pa. and Cleveland, Ohio. While at St. Joseph's in Cleveland, he was stricken ill and as assigned to his brother's parish in Beaver Meadows. He was there about three months before receiving his pastorate in Bethlehem two years ago.

He is survived by his brother, Father Paul, his mother, mrs. Anna Firczak who serves as Father Paul's housekeeper, and a sister, Anna, wife of George Meklos, Phoenixville.

Prior to his death 19 years ago,
Father Firczak's father served as cantor in St. Michael's Church, McAdoo, for a number of years.
