Injuries received by Robert Smith, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Barton Smith of Mapleton, who was struck by an automobile near his home late yesterday afternoon, proved fatal to the lad at the City Hospital where he died at 10 o'clock this morning. The machine which struck the boy was operated by Benjamin W. Smith of 67 Standart Avenue, Auburn.
According to a report of the accident, the Smith boy and a companion named King were roller skating near the Smith home at Mapleton and driver Smith claimed that the lad shot across the highway on his skates in the path of the automobile. He endeavored to avoid striking the boy but the machine clipped the lad and then went off the road into a deep snowbank.
The youngster was rushed to the hospital here in the automobile of Walter Dodimead of 14 Lexington Avenue, Auburn. The driver was assisted in a fast trip to Auburn by state troopers who rode on the running board of the Dodimead machine directing other cars to give them the right of way.
In spite of medical attention rendered by Dr. L. P. O'Neill the lad failed rapidly this morning. An examination showed that the boy had sustained a badly fractured skull and numerous bruises.
Besides the parents, Robert is survived by a sister Florence, and a brother Edgar Smith. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
