Shirley Mae Mittlieder passed away in Tillamook on March 25 at age 81.

Shirley was born Dec. 3, 1928, in rural Lebanon to Harry and Zilpha (Filpot) Kelly.

She was a 1947 graduate of Hermiston High School. After her schooling, she was a cosmetology instructor at Phagen's Beauty School in Portland.

Shirley married her soulmate, Donald Mittlieder, in Reno, Nev., in 1970. They enjoyed a wonderfully active life of traveling, camping, crabbing and experiencing many fishing excursions out on the ocean aboard Don's boat, "Poppy's Toy."

In the early 1980s, Don and Shirley moved to Nehalem and settled into a peaceful community with good friends nearby. Shirley will be remembered as an independent, strong, organized woman who spoke her mind.

She was preceded in death by husband Donald in 2006; children Linda and Jerry; and sisters Melba, Dorma and Donna.

She is survived by granddaughter Wendi Miller of Portland; great-granddaughter Nicole Fuller; great-great-grandson Aiden Fuller; and by beloved animal companion "Miss Kitty."

Shirley's family extends its appreciation to Don and Shirley's good friends, Ken and Lenore Lockwood, who were very helpful to her, especially after Don's death and during Shirley's own illness.

At Mrs. Mittlieder's request, no service will be held. Waud's Funeral Home will place her ashes next to her husband at Nehalem American Legion Cemetery.
