Otis was discharged on 29 Mar 1865 on account of wounds (left leg amputated) received in battle on 15 May 1864 at Resaca, Georgia.

Otis married Lydia V Babbitt on 9 Jun 1875 at Andalusia, Illinois. To this union five children were born. The family moved from Millersburg, Illinois to Glenwood in 1892. The trip was made in covered wagons. Otis and Lydia lived in Glenwood until his death.
After several months of sickness, Otis died at his home in Glenwood at the age of 70 years 6 months 24 days.
