He is the son of the late Joseph F. Butala and Catherine H. Bublich Butala of Dillon, Mont. James was born on July 15, 1938, in Butte, Mont. He grew up in Butte and Dillon, Mont., working for Safeway Stores in both cities. He lived in Helena, where he worked at the VA hospital. He later moved to Twin Falls, were he worked for Interstate Amusement Corporation.
