The son of John V, Duke of Brittany and Jeanne de France, herself the daughter of the King of France, Charles VI, Gilles was the Prince of Britain, but received from his father a mere privilege. At his inception in 1442, his brother Francis of Britain sent an embassy to King Henry VI of England, granting him a pension. Gilles obtained the Barony of Chateaubriant and many places in Britain.

Gilles de Bretagne died smothered between two mattresses in the castle of Saint-Hardouin Launeuc. His execution was carried by Meel Olivier and other accomplices on the order of Gilles' brother, Duke Peter of Brittany.
