Earl was born with Hydrocephalus or water on the brain. He passed away at the Glenwood Institute for Feeble Minded Children - now called the Glenwood Resource Center. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis.
Earl was admitted to the institute in 1915 at age nine and was classified on the admittance form as "Idiot". The term used today is "profoundly retarded".
The family kept him at home for as long as they could manage him and sadly had to institutionalize him when he became too hard to control. His father took him to Glenwood and visited him several times even though they lived in another state. According to Earl's sister Gretchen, his mother never got to go because She was either pregnant or had a baby.
