According to the obituary of his father, Major Abbott (The Perry Republican, 03 Jan 1924, Thu · Page 1), Julius had worked as a smelter in California and the fumes from the smelter affected his mind and he was confined to an asylum in California for four years. He returned to the family homestead in Perry, OK; "he has been morose and melancholy, wandering about at night but never seeming to be dangerous, though upon one or two occasions having an outbreak of temper." Julius had hit his father, Major, on the head with an ax several weeks prior to Major's death. The wound was serious but did not fracture the skull and because he treated the wound himself, it became infected, and Major was sent to the hospital in Guthrie, OK for an operation and died there from complications of the wound infection. Julius was subsequently jailed, then admitted to the state asylum (for negroes) in Taft, Muskogee, OK and remained there until his death.
