Mary Sue Burks, beloved mother, wife, and friend, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 6, 2011. Sue was born September 24, 1931 in Claremore, OK, the daughter of Harley and Lilly (Smith) Varnell. Her early years were spent in Claremore. Later her family moved to Porum, where Sue attended grade and high school and later attended Draughons Business College. Sue married Ted Burks in 1959 and worked at Atlas Life in Muskogee until they moved to Oklahoma City. Sue was a homemaker and also worked for the Putnam City School System until they moved back to Fort Gibson in 1991. Sue was a familiar face at the Muskogee Red Cross. She and her husband, Ted, assisted at 27 major disasters and traveled all across the U.S. She was very active in the First United Methodist Church in Fort Gibson. She did missionary work in Mexico and New Mexico. Sue lived her life as a celebration of love, friendship, faith, and service to others. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, May Parks, Bonnie Labuff, and Marie Jones. Survivors include her husband, Ted; brother, H. B. Varnell and wife, Virginia; son, Darrell Ellis and wife, Frieda; daughter, Tanya Ward and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Amber, Brandon, Gabriel, and Gideon. Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Mary Sue Varnell Burks at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 10, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Gibson with Reverend Barry Collins officiating. Pallbearers will be David Langston, Darrell Ellis, Brandon Ellis, H. B. Varnell, Robert Ward, and Josh Ward. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee under the direction of Millsap Funeral Service of Fort Gibson. The family would like to thank Professional Home Hospice for taking excellent care of Sue during her long illness.
