POULTNEY - Mrs. Joyce Ann Ainslie, 67, a longtime resident of Poultney, went to be with the Lord, Monday, June 6, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Joyce was born May 13, 1944, in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Edward P. and Joyce E. (Wittemore) Thomas. She was a 1962 graduate of Poultney High School.

Joyce was first employed for several years at the former Coon's Store in Castleton. She then waitressed at the Somewhere Restaurant in Fair Haven and later went to work at Tot's Diner in Poultney, where she waitressed for many years before retiring. When she was not at work, she enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo, bowling and fishing. During the last 10 or so years of her life, Joyce and her siblings devoted much of their time to raising money for breast cancer research and support for cancer survivors.

Joyce is survived by her mother, Joyce E. Thomas of Poultney; her husband, Buzz Ainslie, also of Poultney; her children, Michael Jones and his wife Jennifer of Castleton, Missy Jones and her fiance, Jeff Scott of Poultney and Michelle Murray and her husband Scott of Poultney; her stepchildren, Michelle Jackson of N.C. and Stephen Ainslie of California. She also leaves behind her siblings, Ray Thomas and his wife Doris of Fla., Robert Thomas and his wife Laurie of Rutland, Linda Bailey and her husband Greg of Saratoga, N.Y., Sally Rowden and her husband Dave of Brandon; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Edward; a sister, Phyllis J. MacMurtry; and two brothers, Billy and Edward Thomas Jr.

Graveside memorial services will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. in the Poultney Cemetery with Rev. Robert Noble, pastor of the Castleton Federated Church, officiating. Immediately following the service, a reception for sharing memories and fellowship will be at St. Raphael Church Parish Center.

There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, Joyce's family requests that memorial contributions in her memory be made to the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Durfee Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Fair Haven.
