Ivan W. Beams
HOBART — Ivan W. Beams, 73, of Hobart, died at his home on Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.
He was born May 27, 1925, in Middletown, the son of Charles H. and Minnie A. (Davenport) Beams. He married Eleanor L. McDowell on Jan. 20, 1946, in Middletown.
Mr. Beams served with the 84th Infantry Division in the European Theater and fought through the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of many medals and honors, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Bronze Star Cluster.
He graduated Magna Cum Laud from Oswego in 1950, received his master's degree from Oswego and did most of his doctoral degree at the University of Rochester. He was an industrial arts teacher at West Irondiquoit High School from 1950-64; was high school principal at Westhill High School in Syracuse, from 1964-67; superintendent at Brewster Central schools from 1967-70, and superintendent at South Kortright Central School from 1970, until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Beams was the Founder of R.E.A.C.H. (Hobart Activity Center) in 1984, retiring in 1997.
His community memberships included active membership on the Hobart Village Board; Hobart Emergency Squad; Hobart Rotary Club; Hobart United Methodist Church; member of Epsilon Phi Tau for many years and many other organizations. As a member of the 84th Infantry Society and a director, he planned their 53rd reunion for Albany, in 1998, and was the Northen Chapter president for eight years. He was a member of the American Legion, Stamford, and the VFW Post 6292, Stamford.
He leaves his wife of 52 years; a son, Charles H. Beams and his wife, Dolores, of Pennellville; and one granddaughter, Amy Eleanor Beams of Jamesville.
He was predeceased by a brother and sister, both as infants.
His funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Calling hours with the family in attendance will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will take place in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.
