Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 6th Maryland Volunteer Infantry. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He was awarded the CMOH while a Sergeant for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads "Was the first enlisted man of the 3rd Division to mount the parapet of the enemy's line."
