Ruth Munn, 94, Coeur d'Alene pioneer, passed Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in Spokane.
- She was born Nov. 26, 1908, to Chlora (Smith) and William W. Taber in Lebanon, Mo. The Taber family moved to the Spokane area from Sharon Springs, Kan., and then to Coeur d'Alene in 1921, when Ruth was 12 years old. At the time, Fourth Street was a one-track dirt road. The family followed Ruth's maternal grandmother, Ida M. Smith, who moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1907 to live near Ida's brother Walter Wilson, who owned land from Hattie to Annie Avenues. Ruth saw cars mired in the mud after the spring melts, and the first concrete poured in Coeur d'Alene.
- Ruth worked as a helper in the home of local pharmacist Sid Woodcock, taking care of a new baby, a job Ruth liked. She attended Coeur d'Alene High School but dropped out to marry Hector Munn on April 22, 1925, in Coeur d'Alene. They bought a piece of land from Ruth's great-uncle Wilson for their home, across Fourth Street from their families. Hector built a two-room house that was soon expanded for a family of four, with the addition of their children Billy and Betty. For 10 years, Ruth worked as a nurse at Lake City General and Kootenai Medical Center.
- Her husband Hector was a talented and hard-working master carpenter and helped build Coeur d'Alene. The Munn family was especially proud of his work on the Federal Building (originally the Post Office) at Fourth and Lakeside, the Harding School, the Montgomery Ward building (now Wiggett's Antique Mall) and the Carpenter's Hall on Lakeside between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Ruth was married to Hector nearly 65 years.
- Ruth enjoyed hunting, fishing, crochet, gardening and spending time on the lake with her family.
- Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law William H. and Alice Munn of Coeur d'Alene; daughter Betty Ruth (Dykes) Innis, Spokane; grandchildren Dean Dykes, Mary Munn-Dorchak, Judy Dykes-Jacobson, John Dykes, Linda Munn-Walters, Bob Munn; 20 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and sister Evelyn Kirking.
- Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Hector on June 5, 1989, two brothers and two sisters.
- Funeral services were Saturday(9-20-03), at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene. Burial at Forest Cemetery.
