United States Army Brigadier General. He was the third African-American to be promoted to the rank of a General Officer in the United States Armed Forces. Commissioned in the Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1942, he went on to distinguish himself with more that 36 years of active military service spanning World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His life along with that of his wife of more than 30 years, Gloria Marie Lacefield Cartwright, ended tragically in a commercial air incident 25 miles northwest of Dulles International Airport, two months after his retirement from Active Duty. He and his wife are interred together at Arlington National Cemetery.
