Joel Lee was born in Danbury, Conn., in April 12, 1776. On reaching his majority in 1797, he purchased a farm in Ballston and built a house. In 1800 he began a business as a merchant in the growing village of Ballston Spa opening a “general store” for the sale of dry goods, groceries, hardware etc.
