Marvin Nathaniel Brown, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Brownsville, Texas, on November 26, 2010. He was born on December 19, 1916, in Mercedes, Texas, to Joe and Jean Brown. As a young man, he moved to San Antonio with his family, where he was a member of the first graduating class of Thomas Jefferson High School. He continued his education and graduated with a bachelors degree in business from the University of Texas at Austin in 1936.

A short time later, he moved to Brownsville. Marvin met the love of his life, Bernice Kowalski, a member of a pioneer Brownsville family. They married on May 16, 1942, shortly after Marvin enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country in World War II. A lifelong pilot, he served as a naval flight instructor, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Returning first to San Antonio after the war, he joined the family business for a time and then returned and resided in Brownsville until his passing. While in Brownsville he served as personnel director for the Union Carbide Corporation. After the plant closed, he opened Marvin Brown's Auto Parts, and managed other family businesses. An avid civic worker, he was active in Rotary, serving as both the district governor and being named a Paul Harris fellow. He chaired the Republican Party in the Valley for many years, was president of the Charro Days Celebration, active in Planned Parenthood, and remained active in Brownsville active days until recent years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Jean Brown; his wife of 64 years, Bernice Kowalski Brown; and a younger brother, Stanley Maurice Brown. He is survived by his only child, Millie, his son-in-law David M. Slaughter Jr., and grandsons David M. Slaughter III and Stewart Alexander Slaughter, and one great-grandson, Brandon Alexander Slaughter, all of Laredo. The family wishes to thank longtime caregivers Erica and Esther Fernandez for their many years of devoted service.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 28, at the historic Hebrew Rest Cemetery in Brownsville. Interment will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, contributions may be sent to the Brown-Slaughter Memorial Scholarship Fund at Laredo Community College, Attn: Community Relations Office, West End Washington Street, Laredo, TX 78040.
