John Rinker, a resident of Grand Rapids township for over seventy years, died at his home in Grand Ridge early yesterday morning following a prolonged illness brought on by the infirmities of old age (and) had been in poor health the past six months.
The decedent was born in Wurttemberg, Germany in the year 1840. He came to this country when he was twelve years of age.
Surviving are twelve children: J.C. Rinker, E.S. Rinker, Mrs. Lizzie Wormley, Griswold, Ia., Pauline, Ottawa, E.A. Rinker, Otter Creek (twp.), R.A. Rinker, Bertha and Minnie Rinker of Grand Ridge, Mrs. Ida Rensch of Cleveland (Ohio).

(There were errors in this obit--John was called James F. even though the headline was clearly John Rinker, Lizzie was called Wornsley, and John was a resident of over 70 yrs--more like 65 yrs.)

GRAND RIDGE BRIEFS:
GRAND RIDGE---John Rinker, an old veteran who was a resident of this township for 65 years, passed away at his home in Grand Ridge Sunday morning where he had resided the past five years. He was laid to rest in Grand Rapids cemetery Tuesday afternoon with a large cortege of friends following him to his last resting place.
(Burial was on Tuesday, May 30, 1922)
He had been married twice--1st wife was Wilhelmina "Minnie" Sunderman and from this union were born 14 children. The 2 missing from the obituary were little Katie Rinker and Mrs. Emma Poundstone who preceded him in death. John later married Mary "Ellen" (Bolhouser) Wormley, widow of John Wormley. Likely he met her because she was the mother-in-law to his daughter Lizzie (Rinker) Wormley. John and Ellen were married about 1896 or 7. They had no children from this union. Ellen (Bolhouser) Wormley/Rinker survived John and lived until Sept. 30, 1939. She had been living with John in Grand Ridge, but later moved to Griswold, Ia., to live with her family there, and was buried there while John was laid to rest with his 1st wife, Minnie.

(Being that John was a Civil War veteran as well as a very old resident of the area, it is surprising he did not have a more complete write-up in the paper with more details.) Wm & SJ. Donath #48116482

GRAND RIDGE NEWS ITEM

Mr. John Rinker, aged resident of the village (Grand Ridge) and Civil War veteran, passed away at the family home on Burlington avenue at 5 minutes past 12 o'clock Saturday night (this was actually Sunday). While he had not been in robust health for the past 15 years his last illness was of short duration, death being the result of a complication of diseases (he had diabetes per another article). Mr. Rinker was born at Wittenburg, Germany on Oct. 17, 1840; at the age of 12 years he came with his parents to Illinois, settling on a farm in Allen Township where he resided until he enlisted in his country's call at the time of the Civil War where he served for a period of almost 3 years fighting in a number of the hardest battles of the war such as Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge. At the close he received his honorary discharge and returned to the farm (where) on April 20th, 1869, he was united in marriage with Miss Wilhelmina Sunderman who departed this life May 5, 1893. To this union was born 14 children, seven daughters and seven sons. Two daughters have preceded the father. Those surviving are: Mrs. W. B. Wormsley, Griswold, Iowa; Mrs. Ida Rensch of Cleveland,O.; Miss Pauline Rinker of Ottawa and the Misses Minnie and Bertha of Grand Ridge; J.C. Rinker and E.S. Rinker of Griswold, Iowa; E.A. Rinker, H.F. Rinker, Paul Rinker and R.A. Rinker of Grand Ridge, also his wife, Mrs. Ellen Wormsley to who he was married in 1897 and the following brothers and sisters are: Chris Rinker, Grand Ridge, Wm. Rinker, Kansas, Henry Rinker, Nebraska; his sisters are: Mrs. Conrad Schobert and Mrs. Seibolt both of Nebraska. The deceased often took pleasure relating his experiences during the Civil War and of the pioneer days leaving the home land and settling in the new far west with all its hardships, joys and sorrows. The end came peacefully and without struggle. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the home at 1:30 o'clock (and then) to the Methodist church at 2 o'clock where services were conducted. Rev. J.C. Craine officiating. The interment was made in the Grand Rapids M.E. cemetery. The family are extended the sympathy of their friends and neighbors in their bereavement.
(In another article it stated that the only other Civil War veteran living who could join in on the Memorial Day exercises was Anton Smith. Mr. Rinker was to be buried on Memorial Day, but I think he was buried the next day on Tuesday, instead.)
