US Congressman. Born on a farm near Fort Wayne, Indiana, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and commenced to practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was prosecuting attorney for the thirty-eighth judicial circuit of Indiana (1886-90), then resumed the practice of law. In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1905. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until 1908, when he retired and relocated California. He died at age 80 in Los Angeles, California.
