US Congressman. Elected to represent Indiana's 10th District in the Thirty-eighth Congress, he served from 1863 to 1865. The Vermont native studied law at the Plattsburg Academy in New York, was admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced practice in Manhattan. In 1844 he settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During the 1850s and early 1860s Edgerton served as director of several Indiana railroad companies and acquired land and industrial interests that extended to the East Coast. A member of the Whig Party in his younger years, he later became an Independent and was elected to Congress as a Democrat. Defeated for reelection in 1864, he virtually abandoned the law and politics to oversee his business affairs. Edgerton died during a trip to Boston. He was the brother of Congressman Alfred Peck Edgerton.
