U.S. Congressman. After graduating from South Carolina College, in 1860, he served in the Civil War, as a Private in Company F, 6th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Confederate Army and lost an arm in the Battle of Seven Pines. He then studied in Europe, returned to America, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice law at Chester, South Carolina. He was solicitor of the sixth judicial circuit of South Carolina, (1868-74) and a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1882-90). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1894. Appointed United States district judge of the district of South Carolina, he served (1894-1911). After leaving the bench, lived in retirement until his death at age 75.
