appointed 1st Lt. of Artillery by South Carolina
and reported to duty in Virginia under General
Joseph E. Johnston. He joined his friend Bee,
who was then a General in the Confederacy, as
assistant adjutant general and took part in the
Battle of Manassas, where he was wounded and
Bee was killed. In October 1861 Hill received
rank of Major and became adjutant general to
General Whiting with whom he served from the
Peninsula Campaign in Virginia to the fall of
Ft Fisher.
