U.S. Congressman. He moved to Iowa, with his father in 1844, attended Allegheny College Pennsylvania, in 1845 and taught school at Union Academy Tennessee, (1845-47). Returning to Iowa, he studied law, was admitted to the Clinton County bar in 1848 and practiced law. He went to California in 1849, engaged in mining and returned to Iowa in 1851. He was Judge of Clinton County (1851-53), prosecuting attorney of Clinton County in 1854, Mayor of Lyons (1855-57), a member of the Iowa State constitutional convention in 1857 and a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1868-70). In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for re-nomination he relocated to California in 1883 and engaged in the practice of law until his death at age 85.
