U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Stockton Business College California, in 1896, studied law at the University of Michigan, was admitted to the bar in 1897 and commenced to practice law in Williams, Arizona. He was a member of the Arizona Territorial House of Representatives, (1897-99), served in the Arizona Territorial Senate in 1903 and was District Attorney of Coconino County, (1905-08). Upon the admission of Arizona as a State was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1912-41). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was chairman for the Committees on Indian Affairs, Industrial Expositions and to Investigate Trespassers on Indian Land. He was also appointed a member of the Board of Immigration Appeals in the Department of Justice, serving until he retired in 1943. In retirement, he devoting his time to classical poetry and made several public appearances. He died of a stroke at age 87.
