U.S. Senator. He attended Culver-Stockton College, the University of Missouri, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1936 and opened a legal practice in Bowling Green, Missouri. He was prosecuting attorney of Pike County (1937-41), Bowling Green City Attorney (1941-45), and a member of the Missouri State Senate (1945-55). He was elected as a Democrat, the 36th Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, serving (1957-60), when he was elected in a special election to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas C. Hennings, Jr., serving (1960-68). After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in farming until his death.

He and Florence had one daughter, Ann Garner Long Miller; Ann had one daughter, Ann Elizabeth Miller who was left the bulk of Sen Long's estate.
