At age 17, Richard was tragically killed in an accident at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, known as 29 Palms, the largest United States Marine Corp base, located adjacent to the city of Twentynine Palms in southern San Bernardino County, California.
TWENTYNINE PALMS -- A weekend of recreational desert motorcycling ended in tragedy Saturday when two Los Angeles area boys drove on to the Marine Base gunnery impact area here and were killed by an artillery round that exploded, sheriff's Capt. Victor Hagstrom said. Dead at the scene were Richard Brooks, 17, of Manhattan Beach, and Shane Krigbaum, 11, of Inglewood. Hagstrom said it was not known exactly what triggered the projectile. "The entire area is an impact area, and there are remains of projectiles on the ground," he said. Military authorities indicated the ordnance in the area included 66 and 44 millimeter rockets.
