US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served for eight consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives (June 1963 until January 1975 from California's 23rd district and January 1975 until December 1978 from California's 33rd district). Born Delwin Morgan Clawson, he attended Gila College in Thatcher, Arizona before moving to California where he worked with the Federal Public Housing Authority. In 1953 he entered politics when he was elected to the city council of Compton, California, serving until 1957 when he was elected mayor of the city. In June 1963 he was chosen in a special election to fill the vacancy of Congressman Clyde Doyle who had died three months earlier. He retired from Congress in December 1978 and was succeeded by Thomas M. Rees. He died at the age of 78.
