During the Civil War he belonged to Company B, 15th Georgia Infantry, Benning's Brigade in the Northern Virginia Army. The 15th Georgia was organized on July 15, 1861. He was a private and enlisted on September 23, 1861.
He was captured at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863. He was exchanged at Fort Deleware on March 7, 1865. The 15th Georgia fought in many battles including the Seven Days Battles, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredricksburg, and Gettysburg. They surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
