Obituary in part: When about nine years of age, he with his parents moved to Barron County where they filed on a homestead four miles west of Chetek. Mr. Ross spent the greater part of his life in this vicinity. He went to the country schools in this county but a short time. By his persistent effort in study at home, he was soon able to pass a teacher's examination and at the age of eighteen began teaching. This profession he followed for about thirty years. About 1888, he went to Nebraska, where he taught school for three years, during which time he met and married Miss Mabel Colbourn, August 18, 1889. With his wife he drove a horse and buggy back to Wisconsin and located on a farm northwest of Chetek.
