Dr James Edward Baker was born in Abbeville Co, SC, the son of Joseph Thomas Baker (1796–1870) & Laney Griffin (1796–1887).

He was married 22 Mar 1849 to Samira Maupin Bronston (1821-1856), daughter of Rev. Thomas Springer Bronston, Sr & Lucy Clark of Madison Co, KY. His younger sister, Henrietta Aurelia Baker (1832-1906) was married in 1852 to Tom & Lucy's nephew, Thomas Springer Bronston, II. It may be assumed that the Bronston and Baker families became acquainted when the Reverend Bronston, an itinerant preacher, was travelling the deep South.

The Bakers had 1 child: Lucy Laney Baker (1850–1908), w/o Dr William Buchanan Burke.

After Samira died, Dr Baker married Mrs Sarah A "Sallie" (Fowler) Howard (1835–1890), widow of Jonathan J Howard.

Dr Baker was enumerated in 1870 as an inmate of the Lunatic Asylum in nearby Lexington, KY (Eastern State Hospital)- enumerators notes notes read "insane" and "physician".

He died a year later and was buried in the Richmond Cemetery, after which Sallie married Samuel Brockman Phelps.
