Esther Morgan Echtinaw was born March 25, 1841 in LaPorte County, Indiana to Luther and Betsey Morgan. Her great-grandfather was born in Wales and came to America during the Revolutionary War where he served his adopted country as Captain of a privateer; while in action lost his life. Her father, Luther Morgan, came to Branch County, Michigan in 1837 where he stayed only a short time, returning to LaPorte, and then back to Branch County in 1850 with his family. It was Luther Morgan who purchased the island at Coldwater Lake, Michigan which he named Morgan Island, later becoming Echtinaw Island. On February 5, 1862 Esther was united in marriage to John Echtinaw. Twins being traditonal wit the family, Esther was the mother of seven children of which there were two sets of twins. Twins, Willie and Lillie died at the age of four months, another child died at birth. Esther Echtinaw lived with her husband for forty-eight years on the island that bears her family name. Esther died of cancer on December 29, 1908.
