Abraham Henry Voorhees, farmer, of Mendon, St. Joseph Co., Mich., born at Lysander, N. Y., Mar. 23, 1824; died at Mendon, Mar. 10, 1892; married Feb. 27, 1843 to Sophia Taft (daughter of Moses Taft and Esther Staples, of Mendon, MI). Mr. Voorhees was constable, supervisor, township treasurer, highway and drain commissioner; also deputy sheriff; during the Civil War he was enrolling officer of Mendon Township and deputy U. S. marshal of St. Joseph Co.; for sixteen years he was justice of the peace. In 1864 he was captain of a train of nearly 400 men that crossed the plains to Idaho, concerning which he wrote: "Our trip to Idaho was for the purpose of prospecting for gold. We went through on the north side of the Big Horn and Wind River Mountains, and prospected along the Big Horn and Yellowstone Rivers. On our way we crossed the Little Big Horn, near where General Custer's army was annihilated some years after. It was the first train of white men that went through that part of Indian country."
