Per Betty Jo McCracken Ehn: In 1914 the Harley McCracken family moved to New Raymer, Weld, Colorado. Russell S. McCracken, New Raymer, entered the service in Denver, Colorado on June 12, 1917. Russell served as a Sergeant in the 11th Aero Service Squadron, England and France during World War l. After Russell's separation from the Army he returned to New Raymer, Weld, Colorado where he worked as a mechanic in the auto dealership that Grandpa Charles Hoar owned. The 1918 school census for District No. 91 shows that he was age 20 and enrolled in school. His brothers, Orval, age 17 and Ronald, age 10 and sister Ruby, age 14, were also enrolled in school. The 1920 census for Weld County lists him as a mechanic and electrician. Russell Sage McCracken married Clara Myrtle Hoar on May 16, 1920. Her brother Raymond Hoar and her friend, Mae Renolts, were witnesses to the wedding. The ceremony was performed by Rev. H. T. LeGrand, a Baptist Minister, in Holly, Prowers, Colorado. After their marriage the couple returned to New Raymer, Weld, Colorado and lived in the home of Russel's parents, Harley and Edith Aleida McCracken. It would appear that 1921 was the last formal schooling Clara Myrtle had and that she completed the 9th grade. The New Raymer school records in 1921 lists her as Myrtle McCracken.
Shortly after the 1921 school year, Russell and Myrtle moved to Sterling, Logan, Colorado. Sterling is about 50 miles east of New Raymer. Russell was studying to be a mortician and while living on the cemetery grounds, served as Sexton at the Riverside Cemetery. Their first daughter, Aleida Roark, was born at Denver Maternity Hospital, Denver, Colorado on August 5, 1922. Aleida Roark McCracken died on September 10, 1923 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery. Russell's father, Harley McCracken and George D. Motsinger, second husband to Russel's grandmother, Ida M. Krum, are also buried in the same plot. The 1930 census places the family in Dalhart, Dallam, Texas, where Russell was working in a mortuary. Russel's brother, Ronald was also living in Dalhart, Texas. Ronald McCracken married Harriet Edith Whitacre in 1926. Ronald and Harriet were blessed with a daughter, Paula Jean McCracken. Ronald and his wife divorced and Paula Jean and her mother moved to Illinois. In 1931 Clara Myrtle Hoar McCracken filed for divorce. Russell and Myrtle divorced on June 24, 1932. In 1936 Russell moved to Scottsbluff, Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Russell married Nina C. Polly on August 5, 1938. Three children were born of this union; Joyce Kay, Michael D. and Richard Lee. Russell was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and received a pension. He owned and operated Mac's Auto Repair in Scottsbluff from 1951 until 1965. He had a heart attack and died on April 12, 1973 at the age of 75 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff, Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.
