The oldest of three sons of Nancy (Crandall) and Marcus McNitt, Alvia was born in Bristol, Indiana on September 11, 1866. At the age of nine, his family moved to the home of his grandparents on Coldwater Lake. As a young man he married Ida Cheney on October 25, 1888. For twenty-one years they made their home on a farm on the Indiana Road in southern Ovid Township. He left Branch County and moved his family to a farm in western New York State, near Jamestown, where they lived for fifteen years. The last seven years of his life, he lived in Stamford, CT where he passed away on January 16, 1932.
