After a battle with lung cancer, retired District 4 M/Sgt. Gene Base, 81, passed away on June 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

Gene was a Korean War Veteran in the U.S. Army; He began his career with the Illinois State Police on July 13, 1957. He retired on January 31, 1984 after 26 and a half years of service. He was retired for 27.37 years.

Gene is the beloved brother of Norma Jeanne (Jim) Lee, Adrienne (Hugh) Goulding and James. Loving uncle of 14 nieces and nephews.

There will be no wake but there will be a memorial service to be announced at a later date.

Gene will be cremated and his remains will be interred at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

Gene Base, 81, of Momence, formerly of Blue Island, passed from this life Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Provena Heritage Village under the compassionate care of the Hospice Of Kankakee Valley.

Gene was born December 18, 1929 in Chicago to the late Mary nee Kalata and the late Sigmund Base. He is the beloved brother of Nomajeanne (Jim) Lee, Adrienne (Hugh) Goulding and James Base. Gene is the loving uncle of fourteen nieces and nephews.

Gene was a United States Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He retired from the Illinois State Police as a Master Sergeant in 1981 after more than twenty-six years of service. Gene was then employed by the Metropolitan Sanitary District for ten years. He was a member of Illinois State Police Trooper Lodge 41 and the Bourbonnais Computer Club and Tai Chi, Quipping of Kankakee.

A memorial visitation was held for Gene on Friday, July 1, 2011 at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave., Blue Island. Fr. Joseph Seitz officiated. Gene was interred at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Illinois, on June 29, 2011.
