PROCTOR - Burton H. McCullough Sr., 81, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born on April 12, 1930, in Proctor, VT, the son of Homer and Ruth (Landon) McCullough.

He graduated from Proctor High School in 1948.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War as a radio operator. He was honorably discharged to return home to work on the family dairy farm with his father.

For his lifetime, Burt, along with his son, owned and operated the only farm now left in the town of Proctor.

He was a member of the Vermont Farm Bureau, Vermont State Fair Association, Center Lodge #34 F&AM, Cairo Shriners of Rutland, and Gilman Chapter #81 OES.

Family was the most important thing in his life.

His great sense of humor and witty personality would bring a smile to your face and would warm your heart and soul.

Burt is survived by his wife, Shirley (Foley) McCullough, of Proctor; two daughters, Janet and husband Ronald Biro of Proctor, and Sheryl and husband Robert Manfredi of Rutland; two sons, both of Proctor, Burton McCullough Jr. and wife Rita, and Thomas McCullough; grandchildren Maryann and husband Clint Kinney of Durham, Maine, Jonathan Biro and fiancée Emily Armstrong of Beverly, Mass., Kristen and Stacey McCullough, both of Newport News, Va., and Bethany Manfredi of Rutland; two sisters, Evelyn Frazier of West Rutland and Mary Jane and husband Paul Cunningham of Los Alamos, N.M.; one brother, Warren McCullough and wife Anita of Proctor, one sister-in-law, Olive McCullough of West Rutland; close family friend of over 40 years, Ralph Sweet; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Roy McCullough, and a brother-in-law, Robert Frazier.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Union Church of Proctor in Proctor at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 80 Belden Road #6, Rutland, VT 05701 or a favorite charity of one's choice.
