He became the first attorney in the city of Beresford, SD. In 1898, he was elected as the first mayor of Beresford, SD; and, he served two terms during the period of the installation of the city's water works and sewage systems. Later, he served as city attorney. In 1903, he was elected to the South Dakota State Senate and was re-elected in 1905. After his second term, he spent many years on the state board of regents. In 1927, USD awarded his the Doctor of Laws to recognize his services. Until the time of his illness, her served as vice president of Security State Bank.
