He was born May 31, 1931, in Buhl, Idaho, to Fay and Nellie Hunt. As a young man, Richard learned to pilot a plane. He was also scouted by a professional baseball team. He was proud of his Eagle Scout rank and was a lifelong supporter of scouting.
He was proud to be an American and served in the Army from 1951 to 1954. On Feb. 9, 1954, he married his sweetheart, Joyce Holt, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. The great loves of his life were his family, the outdoors, the LDS church and his music. He was an entertainer, playing the guitar and singing, throughout his life. All his children and grandchildren inherited his love of music. Richard lived to hunt and fish and was an avid teller of tall hunting tales. He was a dedicated member of the LDS church and served in numerous capacities including five years as bishop of Kimberly 2nd Ward. He and Joyce also served as temple workers for 11 years in Boise and in Twin Falls. Richard was a gunsmith and also worked for 22 years at Amalgamated Sugar Company in Twin Falls.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; his sons, Jon (Connie) of Kimberly, Dan (Gail) of Pocatello, David (Margaret) of Inkom, Idaho, Tim (Merri) of Herriman, Utah, Daryl (Carol) of Kimberly and Bob Nickelson (Louise) of Payson, Utah; and his daughters, Joy Clements (Val) of Buhl and Gina Lay (David) of Idaho Falls. He is also survived by 38 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and an infant granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Kimberly LDS Birch Street building Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Twin Falls.
