A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Lakeland Memorial park.
Born June 12, 1923, in Union County, he was a son of the late Lemuel Sylvester Helms and Dora Pigg Helms.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Williams Helms of the home; 1 son, 1 daughter, 2 brothers, 1 sister; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.
