Arthur H. Doerr was the only child of Arthur H. Doerr, Sr. and Nettie (Felts) Doerr, who have preceded him in death. Arthur was born on August 28, 1924, "Art" passed away on June 16, 2011.

He grew up in Johnston City, Illinois, where he graduated as valedictorian from Johnston City Township High School. His formal higher education, interrupted by World War II, was undertaken at Southern Illinois University, B.A. (high honors), University of California (Barkley), Indiana University, M.A., Northwestern University, Ph.D.

During World War II, after being commissioned a second lieutenant, he served as a navigator-radar operator in the 2nd B-25 combat Weather Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

He resumed and completed his formal higher education and served on the faculties of Northwestern University and the University of Oklahoma before joining the University of West Florida as Professor and Vice-President for Academic Affairs in 1970. Prior to coming to UWF, he had been Chairman of the Department of Geography, Dean of the Graduate College and Regents Profession at the University of Oklahoma.

After leaving his past as Academic Vice-President at UWF he served as Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the Anna Boland Professor of Geography until his retirement in 1992. During this time, he was given the Research and Creative Activities Award and the Distinguished Service Award. Earlier, at the University of Oklahoma, he was given the Distinguished Teaching Award.

During leaves of absence, he had been Fulbright Professor at University of the Philippines and Chief of Party of the University of Pennsylvania USAID Project to Pahlavi University, Iran. In summer sessions, he taught at Wisconsin State University at Stevens Pt., Central Washington University, Western Washington University and George Peabody College.

Other employment stints included roles as Intelligence Expert for Army Intelligences Geographer for the Dorudzon, Archaeology Excavation, Iran, Geologist for the Oklahoma Geological Survey, and Cartographer and Field Team Chief for the Rural Land Classification Program of Puerto Rico.

Over the years, he authored, or co-authored, more than a dozen books, scores of scholarly articles, and countless signed book reviews.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dale, a son, Marc and daughter-in-law, Margaret. Those wishing to memorialize his passing may make contributions to the Arthur H. Doerr Faculty Scholarship Fund at the University of West Florida Foundation.

Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
