TRENTON, GA - Claude Ernest Owens Jr., 90, passed away, Friday, June 17, 2011.
He was born August 22, 1920.
He was a graduate of Dade County High School and UT-Chattanooga. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
He worked for Dyer Lumber while going to school. He was a teacher and principal at New Salem School.
He worked at U.S. Pipe and Wheland drafting department and a sales rep for R.J. Reynolds in La Grange and Newnan, Ga.
He was plant manager of Davenport Hosiery Mill, salesman for Rosalyn Ray Cosmetics, Volunteer Credit Life Insurance Co. He retired from Chubb Insurance.He had traveled all of the United States except Hawaii, traveled extensively in Europe.
He was a member of city of Trenton Planning committee, he was a charter member serving over 20 years as president of Dade County Historical Society, which included buying the building; he served on several boards with Hutcheson Medical Center. He was a caregiver for senior citizens for a lot of years.
He knew more about old and antiques building than anyone in Dade County and enjoyed talking about the 1800s.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude E. and Sallie F. Owens Sr.; brother, Glenn Albert Owens; sisters, Sarah Gass and Mary Elizabeth Fischers; one niece, Rosalyn Owens.
He enjoyed people and entertaining them which included cooking as well and playing the piano.
Survived by brother and wife, Joe and Leola Owens, Trenton; one niece, Donna Rae Jacobs; one great-nephew, John Jacobs; several cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. EDT Sunday, June 19, 2011, with the Rev. Terry Turner officiating at Trenton First Baptist Church.
Burial will be held at Payne Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. today and 1-3 p.m. Sunday.
