George Lewis Dukes was born in Alabama (probably Conecuh County) around 1827. On 25 October 1848 in Monroe County, Alabama, he married Narcissa Watson, daughter of Elizabeth Grace Calloway and Thomas Watson. He was a farmer in Conecuh County until 1854, when the family moved to Panola County, Texas purchasing land from A. DeBerry on 18 September 1854. G.L. and Narcissa had 5 children (Thomas Henry, Catharine E., George A., Susan A. and an infant who died at birth). After Narcissa's death in March 1858, G.L. married Judith Ann Williams on 11 August 1858, Panola County, Texas. They had 5 children (Clinton, Austin, Nancy Ella, Robert Washington and Mary T.). On 21 June 1862 G. L. enlisted in Company E, 11th Regiment Texas Infantry, Confederate States Army. In 1867, G.L. found himself a widower again, and on 7 July 1867 he married Melissa Aiken. They had William Edny and Madora before Melissa died in 1875. On 8 August 1875 G.L. and Sarah E. Leslie McCormack Campbell were married. They had twins - Malcolm and Julius Jarrell before divorcing on 10 March 1881. G.L. married for the last time on 25 June 1881 to Nancy Elizabeth Falwell (widow of William A. Lake). She survived him, and applied for a Confederate Widow's Pension on 26 November 1914 which was granted.
